Obama: Stop finger-pointing over oil leak

By the CNN Wire Staff
UPDATED: 07:24 PM EDT 05.14.10

(CNN) – President Obama on Friday criticized executives from BP and two other companies for blaming each other for the continuing oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.
“I did not appreciate what I considered to be a ridiculous spectacle during the congressional hearings into this matter,” the president said after meeting with Cabinet members to discuss the situation. “You had executives of BP and Transocean and Halliburton falling over each other to point the finger of blame at somebody else. The American people could not have been impressed with that display, and I certainly wasn’t.”
“I understand that there are legal and financial issues involved, and a full investigation will tell us exactly what happened. But it is pretty clear that the system failed, and it failed badly. And for that, there’s enough responsibility to go around. And all parties should be willing to accept it,” he said.
The acceptance of responsibility includes the government, Obama said.
“For too long, for a decade or more, there’s been a cozy relationship between the oil companies and the federal agency that permits them to drill,” he said.”It seems as if permits were too often issued based on little more than assurances of safety from the oil companies. That cannot and will not happen anymore. To borrow an old phrase, we will trust, but we will verify. …”
“It is absolutely essential that going forward, we put in place every necessary safeguard and protection so that a tragedy like this oil spill does not happen again.
“This is a responsibility that all of us share,” he said. “The oil companies share it. The manufacturers of this equipment share it. The agencies in the federal government in charge of oversight share that responsibility. I will not tolerate more finger-pointing or irresponsibility.”
BP Group Chief Executive Tony Hayward said in a statement later Friday: “We absolutely understand and share President Obama’s sense of urgency over the length of time this complex task is taking. …”
“BP — working closely with scientists and engineers from across the whole oil industry, from government agencies and departments, and with local officials along the Gulf Coast — is focused on doing everything in our power to stop the flow of oil, remove it from the surface, and protect the shoreline. We are working with state and community leaders to mitigate the impact on the lives and livelihoods of those who have been affected.
“And while we continue in these efforts, we are participating fully in investigations that will provide valuable lessons about how to prevent future incidents of this nature.”

“Cozy relationships?” Without cozy relationships politicians wouldn’t last a day. They’d all be broke and have to go back to working for a living. Seems the only sentence they know by heart is, “Please pass the pork!” Pot/Kettle/Black.

And just THINK about all those poor lobbyists being out of work. Awww!

Well, he can just copy that speech and give it again at the WH&B Advisory meeting in Denver..word for word-it applies..this is his government agency and he needs to fix it..Those loose lips in washington are getting paid to do the work_I am doing for free…they asked if I could volunteer to help clean up the oil..said I would, but I am too busy trying to save the wild hores from being drowned in snake oil….

YOU KNOW WHAT–BET THE GIRLS WOULD BE WILLING TO THROW IN WITH US. MOST OF THEM LOVE ANIMALS,TOO. EVERYONE HAS TO EARN A LIVING, SOMEHOW.

    • sandra longley said

Yeah well, they rounded up all the girls at the mustang ranch and closed it down…think those were BLM guys???

  6. LOUIE COCROFT said

THE GIRLS, AT LEAST, WERE MAKING AN HONEST LIVING AND IN NEVADA, PAYING TAXES. MORE THAN CAN BE SAID FOR THE BUNCH THAT ARE IN SQUANDERING OUR TAX MONEY AND STEALING OUR HORSES AND BURROS. THEY SURE DON’T WORK FOR A LIVING AND ODDS ARE, THEY AREN’T PAYING THEIR FAIR SHARE OF TAXES, EITHER.

I think we need an all out Blitz asking for the resignation of salazar and Bob Abbey..I want an end to the Bush Doctrine of eliminating the wild horses from our lands.I spent two years campaigning, I donated and i voted..I want an investigation into what is going on on these EAs..I really wished i still worked for the asst. attorney generals office..I would like to have a hand in bringing this agency down..My Senator, Ron Wyden publicly stated during the bush administration that the BLM was corrupt and a disgrace..and nothing has changed.

SANDRA, I THINK THE SAME OL’ BUNCH IS STILL RUNNING THE SHOW–DOESN’T MATTER WHICH PARTY GETS IN.

No matter how I try to see this as a non-political issue-it ALL still boils down to politics-usually when you switch political parties in power you see a distinct shift in policies..it tends to even things out…when everyone runs to one side of the boat-it sinks..its the folks in the middle that keep the boat righted and sailing…we desperately need a course correction.

  8. More and more these days, I keep hearing politicians say the same statement over and over… “The government is broken.” Just this morning while checking on the Gulf Oil situation, I heard Sarah Palin and the Gov. of AZ talking about the new immigration laws there in AZ. (Snuck in a news bit during the oil update.) Both said the same thing. They went on to criticize Obama for his lack of action – “We – as citizens of the Great Country of America – need to tell our President… “Protect our borders.”
I found this somewhat ironic in relationship to our same message: Protect our wild horse’s borders, don’t let them be removed. It seems like everyday now Sandra and I are scrabbling to get the latest proposed gather information posted and out to you guys. And everyday we end up “behind the 8 ball” because there are just too many to keep up with. Even with a “tentative schedule”, we just can’t keep up all the time.
I like the word “blitz”… It seems to be the perfect description of the urgency seen in these gathers.

Geez, I thought Palin was tied up protecting the shores of Alaska from the Russians,,See the glass is 1/2 full..under a different administration we would probably have her as the Sec of Interior, and the “first dude” as BLM head…thats how much worse it could get…

I KNOW. YOU GUYS ARE DOING SO MUCH AND WORKING SO HARD ON THIS. IT IS SO APPRECIATED. DON’T THINK IT ISN’T MAKING HEADWAY. JUST GOT A NEWSLETTER FROM IDA. THIS IS PART OF A QUOTE. I WONT TAKE UP SPACE WITH THE WHOLE PARAGRAPH:
….AND THE PUSH FOR A MORATORIUM ON ROUND-UPS. SUCH FEATS ARE UNPRECEDENTED AND JUST THE BEGINNING.
    I THINK WE ARE “BLITZING”.

  10. LOUIE COCROFT said

THAT LAST PART ABOUT “BLITZING” IS MINE. WANT TO BE ACCURATE HERE. I SHOULD HAVE MADE THAT A LITTLE MORE CLEAR. BOTTOM LINE–THIS HASN’T HAPPENED BEFORE, AT LEAST NOT IN A VERY LONG TIME. NOT ON A GLOBAL LEVEL.

The pols that are “in” need to get the message NOW that if they don’t start doing what WE are asking for, then they will be “out” next election. ANd if the new guys don’t get it, they go too. We pay them, they are supposed to work for US, not all the big money special interest groups, I am tired of the same old same old, all the infighting gets nothing done for this country.
After this sisaster in the Gulf, off-shore drilling needs to become a non-issue,
Tracie and WIllis, thanks for the foal update, I do think that having this winter roundup has really brought a LOT of attention to BLM, no one like’s to see babies die.
I really have more of a problem with the way they are rounded up , how they are treated now seems to be as good as they can do out there with way too many horses and not enough people

I SEE A LOT OF NEW NAMES COMING INTO THE BLOGS. MORE AND MORE PEOPLE COMING ON. THEY ARE READY AND WILLING TO HELP.

  13. LOUIE COCROFT said

ALSO, REMEMBER–THIS COALITION ONLY STARTED BACK IN SEPTEMBER. THERE HAVE BEEN LONE SOULS FIGHTING FOR YEARS WITH NOT MUCH HELP. WE CAN ALL SEE WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN UP AGAINST.

    • sandra longley said

I think those people had their hands full in their local HMAs..Thats why I decided to devote my time to ALL of the HMAs,,just like now-they are coming fast and furious..no time to dwell on the last one..anytime you start “fast tracking” anything..you are going to start skipping steps and thats what i am looking for..but at some time there will be time for a retrospect on ALL of these..and I anticipate a legal action that brings together the multitude of organizations that now exisit..a class action suit-representing the citizens of the united states vs the BLM

  14. LOUIE COCROFT said

SANDRA, RIGHT ON-COALITION! SPEAKING OF–DOES ANYONE KNOW WESTERN WATERSHED’S POSITION ON THE HORSES? WOULD THEY BE WILLING TO COMMENT ON THESE SLATED ROUND-UPS AS THEY COME UP?
    HOW ABOUT WILD EARTH GUARDIANS?
