House Report 110-093 – To Restore the Prohibition on the Commercial Sale & Slaughter of Wild Free-Roaming Horses & Burros

To go along with House Report 110-093, here is the web address for Congressman Jeff Flake, R-AZ, http://flake.house.gov/ Congressman Flake also has a “Spotlight” series… Egregious Earmark of the Week

In the “Dissenting Views” section of House Report 110-093, Congressman Flake made the following comments:

“I oppose H.R. 249. This legislation needlessly eliminates the sale authority of the Bureau of Land Management and bans the sale or transfer of wild horses and burros for commercial processing, which is already prohibited by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Under current law, BLM is allowed to sell animals that are either more than 10 years old or have been offered unsuccessfully for adoption at least three times. Roughly 2,300 animals have been successfully sold into private care. Selling old animals that have not been adopted is a humane solution. It places animals into private care and lessens the crowding in holding facilities. The proceeds from selling eligible animals are returned to BLM’s adoption fund to help with the wild horse and burro adoption program, which lowers the overall cost to taxpayers. Because the bill groups the sale of wild horses and burros with the ban on slaughter, I oppose it. I do not believe that the two issues should be tied together. However, I take hope from the Chairman’s promise to hold hearings on the issue in exchange for the withdrawal of my amendment. I look forward to working with the Committee to address our mutual concerns.”

    H.R. 249:
To restore the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming horses and burros

Why is Senator Flake referring to the bill in such terms; “Selling old animals that have not been adopted is a humane solution. It places animals into private care and lessens the crowding in holding facilities”
What type of private care is he talking about? Do horses get a manicure before heading to slaughter?
    I’m sorry, i don’t get it.

    • I was wondering that myself! Does he think that they are calmly and quietly walked into a clean, shiny facility, laid down to rest on soft hay, and that they just drift off to sleep or something???
I really don’t mean to be so forceful with this, but come on!
Private care??? Since when were killer buyers called “private care“??? Yea, its private alright! Private as they can possibly get it so that they can keep right on doing it under our noses!
Gimme a break, for Pete’s sake! How is it a “humane solution” to allow weak and sick horses to be treated with nothing but disrespect and ill-will?
Its like if he said all the right words, just the right way, avoiding some of the harsher words, then he would be “right“.
News Flash: Even the thickest sugar coating comes off in the water!
Thankfully, ideals about this matter like his are not valid any longer because the Approiations Bill said they couldn’t do that anymore!

I’ll get off my soap box / venting stool… but only for now. One of the other readers asked me earlier today what my issues were with this whole situation. It won’t be too much longer before it all comes spillng out. OCD is bittersweet!

Just my take: I don’t think this politician has any clue-that the older horses are not going to get adopted-maybe a rescue..most of those are full, and turning horses away…Most folks who aren’t horse people DON’T realise that adopting a 21 year old stallion thats just been gelded-is not anoption..he didn’t sound like he was for slaughter..just needs to be educated..

        • I think that the comment of “just needs to be educated” is probably the best description of what I have been attempting to convey to anyone and everyone who would listen in the political realms. If I have said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times: How can an individual make a clear, effective and efficient decision about a subject that he/she does not have an understanding and comprehension of in the first place?

I think one of my great frustrations is the entrenched posistions on “both’ sides..I have been trying to convey the importance of keeping focused on “what is best for the wild H&B” I have found some people attack the very groups that would be most likely to be vocal in saving them-which baffels me…because in order to change direction-we are going to need legislation-and in order to get that enacted..it will take ‘many” voices-hundreds of thousands of e-mails, petions, demonstrations, i am having to do that the old fashioned way..one by one..informing and educating..and some sites i can’t send them to..calling AQHA breeders puppy mills..all that is counter productive…calling out aqha to take a stand against slaughter is good…blanketing the whole association with a curse..LOL.. is turning more people away, than I can ever bring in..and i wrote a personal e-mail trying to point out..there is a different way to do this-with out alienating the largest breed in the world- with the largest membership-of potential supporters..I kept getting the “hate mails” back so I just quit trying..Some brick walls ….are just brick walls..
