Henneke Body Condition Scoring System, Con’t…

Posted by Texas Mustang Project on January 21, 2010

Courtesy of Matt Dillon, Director of the Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center… The following pictures are of horses on the Pryor HMA with their names and Henneke scores. These horses are among the many that Matt and his staff follow throughout the year to monitor their status’.

Ghost Dancer, Henneke Score of 3

Galena, Henneke Score of 3.5

Aztec, Henneke Score of 4

Fools Gold, Henneke Score of 4.5

Pheonix, Henneke Score of 5

PryorHennekeScores This is Matt’s histogram showing the distribution of body scores for the 41 females that were scored during the 2009 Pryor Gather. (Any female receiving PZP was scored.) Thankfully, most of the mares scored within acceptable ranges. However, there were some who did not score as well.

I am currently working on a series of editions of YBTJ that will showcase the breakdowns of the Henneke System’s scores and how they relate to the overall health of the horse. There will also be some very educational material discussed in these editions to highlight answers to some of the debates that have been circulating among the Wild Horse Advocates communities. In order to be the most effective we can be in our advocacy efforts, we must first have the knowledge to back up our statements. Any efforts made without said knowledge only serve to put us 2 steps behind our 1 step forward. The wild horses and burros don’t have the luxury of time, therefore let us prepare ourselves as necessary.
