iwant the blm to STOP ALL ROUNDUPS AND RETURN THE HORSES THEY ARE HOLDING BACK TO THEIR HOMES = or turned over to someone like madeline pickens who offered twice to take them

I want them to stop all gathers and allow time to figure out a solution to putting those horses back on the land..no more wholesale roundups conducted like a page from the 3 stooges..Like it or not the BLM will have to institute a horse MANAGEMENT program..to go along with their “non-existant” land management program..Give “internships” to vet students and horsemanship students ect. whose background and motivation is the welfare of the horses with a possibility of drawing those people into a permenent future with the BLM thus insuring a better more qualified personel. They are currently using the removal of horses as their only management tool for managing the land..and I will not stand forWe are going to have to insist-that both programs be fully functional.

Sandra….you have stated the full crux of the problem succinctly and correctly in my opinion…and I like your proposed re-drawn plan outline as well. For now, as you say, I’d favor stopping the round ups until better ideas are in place….given that, the wholesale concept may not be necessary. In the long run I might even cost less. Win-Win.

In short, the best policy, in matters such as this, is when there is doubt, don’t. Develop a plan that meets the wild horse needs and contributes to a better future for all concerned, inclduing the public’s interests at large. I’ve been a “Fed” for part of my career(s) and tend to suspect that the vested interests in this “wholesale” affair are not those with a wide scope viewpoint, but those with the most influence.

It is not an “easy sell” to motivate institutional change. Tracie has gotten an official ear or two because she hasn’t taken an overly strident position and shouted virtually or literally. With my optimist hat on, I believe that is the only way to move forward. Those Feds, at least those who are presumably well meaning otherwise, should respond to people who seek to be part of a solution rather than a layer of the probmem. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt(s).

Why not try the GPS Tracking System they use in Australia for the Brumbys? 12 month study by the University of Queensland show it to be a complete success. They set up trap pens, instead of roundups. Horses are darted from a hidden position, collared, and released within three minutes. They are able to determine habitat and distance. Each horse could be documented and records kept in a database.

That was one of my eary suggestions, having read that study and tried to shame them with the fact we were so backward thinking in the use of technology..Interesting point in their research..is that tracking showed a 3 yr old colt traved 3 days(up to 50 miles) between water holes-and in seperate research…verified over and over..cattle will at the most travel no more than 6/10 of a mile from water(thus the trampleing of water holes.

Read the USGS long term management outline (2002) for WH&B..GPS was tried once back in the early 80s..and they said it wouldn’t work…yet gps collared cattle is a heavily used tool for years to establish grazing patterns and management for cattle..you can read all day and not come to an end to the articles..

I keep harping on the use of global imaging available through the military to accurately and speedily count horses (recommended by USGS in that same report..as a means to end the need for round ups) IMAGINE just the cost savings, let alone the reduction of stress on the herds..why do something so efficient and make …everyone happy..when you could throw millions away and only make a handful of special interests happy. its not that there are no solutions other than what they are doing..its a matter of choices..and being able to recognise the hole they have dug for themselves and admit it.

Oh Yeah, did I mention the fact that my own stress levels would be reduced with this method? I would love to go back to my life..where ever that was when this poop covered ball came rolling downhill like an avalance.!!

        • My stress levels would be much lower with this method too, Sandra! Seriously, if it works for others, why not with the horses, huh? I think the heart of the problem is that the BLM has dug their heels in and is refusing to even consider new strategies just “because.” You know, “If it was good enough for my great-grandfather, it’s good enough for me.” Honestly, that’s the only thing I can think of except they just like to be hated.

Bob Abbey has got to be the most stubborn person on the planet. Either that or the dumbest, and I don’t for a moment believe he’s dumb.

          • sandra longley said

Yeah, I started on a research project on Abbey and then got sidetracked by a more important research project..He spent so many years in nevada in government posistions-he has that hardened attitude about the wild horses..and probably wants to show his homies-he’s the new sheffif that going finally clean those damn horses out of nevada..so when he retires here shortly..he can go home to some backslappin..

TO ALL OF YOU HERE–I THINK THE STRESS LEVELS AT THE AGENCY HAVE ALSO RISEN–THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WONDERFUL WARRIORS! WHO CARES ABOUT TYPOS–WE LOOK FOR CONTENT. WE ARE ALL MOVING SO FAST THAT THERE IS NOT MUCH TIME FOR DOUBLE CHECKING FOR SMALL MISTAKES. THIS IS THE PLACE FOR NETWORKING AND IDEAS. WE HAVE TO MOVE FAST.
I AM SEEING A TEAM THAT COULD READILY COME TOGETHER AND STEP IN AND TAKE THE REINS.
I AM ABSOLUTELY WANTING THE ROUND-UPS STOPPED. TOO MUCH DAMAGE HAS BEEN CAUSED ALREADY.
